A new report talks about chew gum helps recovery from colon surgery:
"Can you chew gum and recover from surgery at the same time? British researchers say it's a great idea for some patients. Chewing gum may speed the return of normal bowel function after colon surgery, a new analysis of five studies suggests. Some patients have trouble moving their bowels after colon surgery but chewing gum may fool the body into good digestion."

I like this discovery, not because I care so much about if you should chrew gum after a surgery, but because it supports a major elements of healthy eating in YBM Diet.  Unlike all the "diet" plans in the media which only tell you what to eat, YBM Diet cares about i) what you eat, ii) how you cook them, and iii) how you eat them.  This is because a good healthy food can be made into an unhealthy food if you do not cook it right, and do not eat it correctly.

Many women patients in my clinic find it beneficial taking supplements rich in phytoestrogen such as lignans. The answer is dependent on your situation. Phytoestrogen has different effect on different situations.

Phytoestrogen is a weaker form of estrogen. In structure, it is similar to estradiol. But in effect, it is a lot weaker. When the body has a lot of its internal estrogen supply, an addition of phytoestrogen from foods actually make the total estrogenic effect less in the body, because it occupies some of the estrogen receptors which would otherwise occupied by the real more potent estrogen. On the other hand, if the body's own supply of estrogen is scarce, eating more phytoestrogen actually enhances the estrogenic effect of to the body.

One of the good books on diet is by Walter Last.  Here're some very good points of his on raw foods:

The main biochemical and nutritional benefit of eating raw foods as compared to cooked foods:

1. A higher vitamin and mineral content
2. Minerals are largely present as biologically active colloids

3. An abundance of helpful enzymes and bio-energy or life-force

4. Proteins remain in their natural condition instead of being denatured

5. The absence of digestive leukocytosis

Antibiotics can harm tendons, FDA warns. Yes, I know what you are going to say, "I used it because I have to - kill the bacteria, not because I like the side effects."

Life is full of compromise, isn't it?
On the other hand, what if we don't "have to"? In the 5000 year Chinese medicine, it was said that top medicine treats people when they are healthy, middle medicine heals people when they are about to get sick (or in sub-healthy condition), low medicine deals with people when they are sick.

My parents both have had high glucose level, and regularly taken diabetes drugs to control. I told them about bad side effects of these drugs and it's better to use diet to treat the disease, only to be told "We're in our 70's, why should we suffer by not eating what we like?"

Well, last fall, they came to visit us, and stayed for a couple of months. Simply by eating with us, with a healthier diet, now both of them are off the drugs. "We learned how your guys eat. Now we don't even want to get back to our previous diet. It feels so good!"

In the article, "Daily caffeine 'protects brain'" by BBC, it's reported that caffeine has been linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer's Disease, and a study by a US team for the Journal of Neuroinflammation explained why. it is mainly due to coffee's blocking the damage cholesterol that inflict on the body, research suggests.
