I have seen so many "expert" advices on increasing metabolism to be more "healthy", e.g., 7 way to boost your metabolism. In these articles, they warn that if caloric intake is dropped consistently to below 1000 a day, the body will be signaled a starvation state. Therefore, it will slow down the basal metabolic rate. Hence, it'll lose less weight. These articles advise instead, people should focus on increasing metabolism rather than reducing caloric intake. This is exactly why it is so dangerous to simply blindly follow trendy "expert" advice! The fact is that if you consistently take in low calories, the body will learn to make your metabolism more efficient (similar to a more efficient engine which use less gas to make the same work). If you continue to reduce caloric intake, the body will have to lose weight when it reaches maximal metabolic efficiency. At this time, you need to stabilize caloric intake maintain the equilibrium. Usually, the body weight at this time is around the weight when you are between 18 to 22 of age. To read more about the science behind of this, go to YBM Caloric Restriction protocol.
