I have heard passing references to the concept that eating carbs and protein together is an intelligent way to eat when on a diet.

Could someone please help me understand the concepts behind not mixing carbs and protein in the same meal? And what the alleged benefits are?

Media tends to give simply

Media tends to give simply blanket answers. However, this is a very complex question. I'd give you as brief as possible an answer:

First of all, the body needs both carbs and proteins, not only for energy but also for cell growth, repair and metabolism. It's dangerous to eat a diet which is heavily unbalanced. There're many FAD diets promoting a protein centric (especially animal protein) program in order to lose weight. They are unhealthy. As fuel for energy, the body uses carbohydrates more efficiently than proteins and fat.

Second, it's much better to eat plant based proteins than animal based. Sciences have proven that there is a positive correlation that animal proteins promote the growth of degenerative diseases such as cancer, which is extensively discussed in the book, The China Study, by the authoritative nutrition scientist Colin Campbell.

Third, carbohydrates range from simple sugar (e.g., refined starchy foods, fully cooked carbohydrates, sweets) to complex sugar (most raw whole foods). Consistently eating a diet with simple sugar upsets the insulin-glucose response of the body, making the body less insulin sensitive, a major cause of type II diabetes. Therefore, in YBM Diet, we promote eating raw, low GI foods. We also promote eating special grains such as chia, wheatgerm instead of white flour and rice.

Lastly, let's talk about food combination. Some carbs easily combine with proteins, others are not. For example, fruits should not be eating together with proteins and fats. This is contrary to how most of us eat. We eat fruits during breakfast together with proteins. We eat fruits as desert after a meal. Fruits clear from stomach fast, and mostly digested in the intestine. So it should be eaten in between meals, or at least at the start of a meal. Soup is another thing which should be eaten first, for it would dilute stomach acid if combined with proteins and fat.  A good article on how the body digests carbs, proteins, and fat can be found here.

Now you see it's not simply just to eat proteins and carbs. It is what and how, and when. It's a complex equation. Of all the diets, only YBM Diet is the tried and true scientifically based.
