In the past few years, the FDA has been criticized for late responses to reports of side effects for some antidepressants, the smoking cessation drug Chantrix and the painkiller Vioxx. Yet Monday's announcement from the FDA proposing a new "black box" suicide risk warning label be added to 11 epilepsy drugs, some of which are also used for pain management, has some suggesting the FDA is overreacting. Today the FDA will hold an advisory panel to hear from epilepsy experts on the proposed black box label.
