A new report talks about chew gum helps recovery from colon surgery: "Can you chew gum and recover from surgery at the same time? British researchers say it's a great idea for some patients. Chewing gum may speed the return of normal bowel function after colon surgery, a new analysis of five studies suggests. Some patients have trouble moving their bowels after colon surgery but chewing gum may fool the body into good digestion." I like this discovery, not because I care so much about if you should chrew gum after a surgery, but because it supports a major elements of healthy eating in YBM Diet. Unlike all the "diet" plans in the media which only tell you what to eat, YBM Diet cares about i) what you eat, ii) how you cook them, and iii) how you eat them. This is because a good healthy food can be made into an unhealthy food if you do not cook it right, and do not eat it correctly. The discovery reinforces our third point of "how you eat them." We promote eating raw foods. God has made most raw foods such that you have to really chrew a lot before you can swolow them into the digestive tract. Take for example, let's eat raw vegetables and well cooked vegetables side by side. You can easily pass your mouth the cooked ones at least twice as fast as the raw ones. Another more extreme example, compare eating cooked v.s. raw sweet potatoes (Note: Some people may argue about enzyme blockers in raw sweet potatoes. You may always supplement with digestive enzymes). You simply cannot send the raw ones into your stomach unless you chew at least 5 times the amount of time as the cooked ones. This would force you to pre-digest very well. According to the discovery, it not only helps digestion, but also helps bowel movement. So make sure whatever you eat, take the time to chew well. It's a critical element of healthy eating! »
