As man ages, one of the first sign is an increase of estrogen and an increase of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). This, even without reduced total testosterone level, will change the key ratio/balance of testosterone/estrogen. It's a known scientific fact that this is the start of andropause - a steady process of male hormone decline and out of balance, a major cause of aging. (Read more YBM Hormone)

Many women patients in my clinic find it beneficial taking supplements rich in phytoestrogen such as lignans. The answer is dependent on your situation. Phytoestrogen has different effect on different situations.

Phytoestrogen is a weaker form of estrogen. In structure, it is similar to estradiol. But in effect, it is a lot weaker. When the body has a lot of its internal estrogen supply, an addition of phytoestrogen from foods actually make the total estrogenic effect less in the body, because it occupies some of the estrogen receptors which would otherwise occupied by the real more potent estrogen. On the other hand, if the body's own supply of estrogen is scarce, eating more phytoestrogen actually enhances the estrogenic effect of to the body.

I was talking to a client. He is a perfectionist in his health, fitness, and look. "I'm scared of tofu. I've stopped eating tofu," said he. "Why?" "My doctor told me it contains phytoestrogen, which can make man woman."

"Well, phytoestrogen is contained in many natural plant foods, oilseeds (such as flaxseeds, sunflower, sesame, olive, etc.), legumes (such as alfalfa, clover, peas, beans, lentils, lupins, and peanuts), grains (e.g. wheat, oats, barley, rice), fruits (e.g. berries, apples), vegetables (e.g. carrots), herbs (e.g. ginseng), alcohol (e.g. beer). Are you going to avoid all of these?" asked I.

Prostate cancer, like many other cancers, is definitely not fun to go through. Not only the potential of death when the cancer spread, but also the risk of side effects such as impotence after surgery. Just listen to the Voice of Prostate Cancer from the New York Times - that will motivate you to try all you can to avoid it.  There's really no good "cure"!

In this article, we'll talk about male hormone replacement therapy (HRT). In the following articles, we'll cover female HRT.

YBM Hormone protocol emphasize critical importance of keeping a young hormone level and balance: "The decline of sex hormones causes many degenerative diseases, among which are decreased muscle and increased fat, skin thinning, osteoporosis, depression, memory loss, decreased energy and endurance, heart diseases, prostate enlargement/cancer (male), breast cancer (female), decreased libido, impotence (male). Fundamentally, DECLINING OF SEX HORMONES MAKES ONE OLD!"

To maintain a young male hormone level and balance, we need to avoid alcohol consumption.

Most studies of alcohol's effects on male reproduction have been conducted in rats because the rat model mimics the human male reproductive system. Research has demonstrated that both acute and chronic alcohol exposure are associated with low levels of hypothalamic LHRH and pituitary LH in the adult and pubertal male rat, and further studies have suggested that alcohol inhibits testosterone secretion by the testes as well.

Many of our patients visiting our anti-aging clinic are confused about tofu. This is because of the confusing report in the media. It has become a FAD that eating tofu is bad, because it "turns" male to female, "due to its phyto-estrogen content", especially when this concept is promoted by some famous doctors (e.g., watch Dr. Mercola's video). There's even articles talking about "soy makes kids gay".

There are never ending new studies that confuse people about the pros and cons of hormone replacement therapy.
The problem is not if HRT is effective, but rather how it is done.

It's known that estrogen dominance, or sex hormone imbalance, is one of the major biomarker of aging, as well as a root cause of breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.

It is further researched that just as the ratios between testosterone and DHT is critical in men, the ratio of 2-hydroxyestrone and 16-alpha-hydroxyestrone in both men and women is very important. 16's is much more potent than 2's. As we age, the ratio changes, causing degenerative diseases such as cancer. A good article to discuss about this is found here by New Spirit Naturals. There are saliva test to measure the ratio, and supplementation method to balance it.

Have you noticed that foods associated with lower or higher prostate cancer risk usually impact breast cancer the same way. There's plenty of scientific studies demonstrating that estrogen excess (as compared with progesterone in woman, and with testosterone in man) is the root cause of breast cancer and prostate cancer, respectively. Thus, keeping hormone balance is utmost important to staying young and vibrant. To learn more about it, go to YBM Hormone!

Estrogen is the worst enemy for men to staying young. As men age, their testosterone drops, estrogen, DHT, and SHBG go up, or at least relatively go up, causing major hormone imbalance. Grapefruits is known for increasing estradiol, the most potent component of estrogen. Here is an article about estrogen replacement. Take a note at how it talks about grapefruits.
