During the last annual physical, I was shocked to test high in trans fat. I eat super healthy.

Upon investigation, I finally zoomed to a few boxes of very delicious oil-free, salt-free walnuts that a friend of mine sent to me. Once I get started with these walnuts, I could not stop. They are delicious and crispy. It would not take much time for me to consume a box. I knew I should not eat too much nuts at one time because its calories. However, my excuse was at least it's healthily cooked.

Well, as I dig deeper, I wondered why I am not so addicted to the home roasted raw walnuts. It does not taste that great. The meat is more oily (non-crispy) and bitter. I suddenly realized that to make the delicious nuts crispy, the manufacturer has to put the nuts through high temperature drying process. Oils, especially polyunsaturated oils may oxidize and hydrogenate under really high temperatures.

So be careful about oils (such as nuts) under high temperature.

Indeed, nature makes foods that naturally limit your appetite. Human learned to process delicious unhealthy foods that can greatly increase your appetite.

In YBM, we have introduced to our members in YBM Diet a few wonder seeds, flaxseed, wheatgerm, chia, quinoe, black sesame, as replacement to common starchy carbohydrates such as rice and wheat flours and their cooked products (steam rice, bread, etc.).  In our online Coach, we also showed videos and recipes of how to eat these wonder seeds.

In our continuing research for wonder seeds, we are glad that hempseed passed our high criteria as a wonder seed.  So now we recommend to add hempseed into our shopping list for the first time.  Here is a good article about the nutritional value of hempseed.

I had a few difficult cases of young and middle aged patients who had severe acnes.  It's been for a while that we used different treatments that are not very effective, either no impact, or causing too much irritation and redness on the face.

Then I ran into an acne solution called Cutisal-2 Acne Control Treatment, using peptide technology, invented by Dr. Chanda Raveri, a molecular biologist, geneticist, protege to two time Nobel Laureate Dr. Linus Pauling, and a pioneer of peptide technologies.  I used it on these patients.  Within 2-5 days, their faces were clear and glowing.  They were so happy.

Thought it'd be good to let YBMers know about this solution.

By the way, we also interviewed Dr. Raveri.  You may see the video here.

Many of us ask how a water purifier and alkaliner works in the body.  We all know that many processed foods are highly acidic, and that the normal metabolic process produce acid in the body.  Therefore, the body has to constantly combat against acidity.  When alkaline buffer in the body is insufficient, the body has to pull calcium out of the bones to keep its pH equilibrium.

I have run into an article by Dr. Sang Wang, author of the book, Reverse Aging.  I think it cannot be said better in explaining how alkaline water works in the body.

Basically, as alkaline water reaches the stamoch, stamoch releases hydrochloric acid in order to keep the normal stamoch acidity of around pH of 4.  During this chemical reaction, not only the hydrochloric acid is produced, but also sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate, which goes to the blood stream, is produced, the later acting as alkaline buffer to combat with the acidity of the body, thus giving the body a total alkaline gain.

To read more about this, go to this article here.  For a quality selection of water alkaliner and filtration system, go to YBM store - Diet Section.

Reading the article on Yahoo Healthy Living, "7 anti-aging super foods", I kept thinking about how people could be confused by the expert's advice.

For example, Chocolate is singled out as a super food.  However, it can hardly believe that the food in the picture on the left can be really healthy!  The rationale in the article is that "The Kuna people of the San Blas islands, off the coast of Panama, have a rate of heart disease that is nine times less than that of mainland Panamanians. The reason? The Kuna drink plenty of a beverage made with generous proportions of cocoa, which is unusually rich in flavanols that help preserve the healthy function of blood vessels"  It is a pretty good conclusion.

However, most chocolate products contain too much sugar, and less flavanols.  Therefore, there's more harm than help.

At least the article should let people know that they should at least take 70-80% cocoa chocolate, and with minimum sugar content.

Take another example, red wine is also touted as a super food.  Red wine is a particularly rich source of resveratrol and the flavonoids which are healthy to the heart.  However, it also contains a good dose of alcohol.  Studies showed that alcohol drinking may increase triglycerides (another Bad blood lipids) and result in weight gain due to its high empty calories. Other studies also suggested that alcohol consumption is associated with cancer risk.  Alcohol is also an oxidant.

Therefore, if you really want to take resveratrol and the flavonoids, why not eat some black grapes, blackberries, ..., taking the good without the bad?

Many of us know that heart attack can come suddenly without warning.  Therefore a routine checkup is necessary to understand the risk.  However, there're not many tests that are credibly with high probability of accuracy.

One of the more definitive medical tests which identify risk of heart attack is the 64 Slice CT Angiogram (or MSCT). However, it's not only costly, but also exposes the body with meaningful amount of radiation.

A new FDA approved test called PLAC shows high promise.  The test, being a regular blood test,  is relatively risk free and low cost.

The PLAC Test is a blood test that measures the level of Lp-PLA2, an enzyme associated with the inflammation of your arteries. Increased levels of Lp-PLA2 increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

In most adults, cholesterol causes a fatty deposit called plaque to build up in the walls of the arteries. When these walls become inflamed, your body produces an enzyme called Lp-PLA2. If the amount of Lp-PLA2 is high, this may indicate that the plaque is more likely to rupture through the inside lining of your artery into your bloodstream, where it may cause a clot that could result in
heart attack or stroke.

So check with your doctor to make sure you add this in your annual physical.

Many of us spend significant amount of time sitting in front of computers, meetings, and airplanes.  This has really bad effect on the lumber spine.  When you sit for a long day, our back muscle becomes so tired that it simply gives up and we settle in a position that all the stress of the weight is on our vertebral discs.

A good device is this simple cushion.  Simply put it on your seat, it will keep your muscles engaged, thus protecting your disc.

The mainstream media and belief is that alternative medicine such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, most of them thousands of years old, are not based on sciences, rather they are based on trial and error without rigorous scientific experiments to verify the validity.

I submit here that time proven medicines are indeed sciences if they can survive for thousands of years.

In applied mathematics and statistics, as I studied in Harvard, there're two types of statistical averages, the ensemble average and the time average.  Both can be statistically significant.

Ensemble average is to observe an phenomena (e.g., an experiment) over many times (or objects) - the very base of scientific research.  For example, if you want to proven the effecacy of a drug, you design an experiment, and apply the drug to a number of rats or human (e.g., 300) for a few months, calculate the average results and draw conclusion.

On the other hand, time average is to apply this drug only on a single person at a time.  When this person is not availabe, apply to another (again only one person).  If you do this over many many years, you will get identical results as the ensemble average, if both experiments are designed correctly.

In mathematical terms, if a1, a2, ..., an are the measurements for the n rats or people during a fixed period, then the ensemble average EA = (a1 + a2 + ...+an)/n.  If b(t1), b(t2), b(t3), ..., b(tn) are the measurements oberserved sequentially during a long period time, t1<t2<t3<...<tn, then, time average TA = [b(t1)+b(t2)+...+b(tn)]/tn.  As n goes to infinity, EA = TA.

This means

Consecutive to our article on male hormone replacement therapy, in this article, we'd like to give you an overview information to arm you with knowledge when you are considering HRT.

Background
First, let's talk about the main female hormones (also present and important in male bodies).  Estrogen consists of mainly 3 forms, estradiol, estrone and estriol, in a ratio roughly 10-20%, 10-20%, 60-80%, respectively.  Like any other hormones, both the magnitude and the ratios among them are critically important to health and longevity.  Estradiol is the most potent,  estrone a little bit less potent, and estriol being the weakest.  In general, the most biologically active estrogens are the unconjugated ones.

Metabolism of estrogens occurs mainly in liver and gastrointestinal tissues.  Most of the metabolism and conjugation of estrogens takes place in the liver.  A major pathway of estrogen metabolism is from estradiol to estrone.  In turn, estrone can be metabolized further to2-hydroxyestrone or 16alfa-hydroxyestrone.  Then finally 2-hydroxyestrone or 16alfa-hydroxyestrone convert into estriol, which are then conjugated primarily as glucuronides, sulfates and thioether to readily excrete via bile, feces and urine.

Progesterone is another vitally important female hormone, which plays a critical role in a woman's body such as pregnancy, bone regeneration.

Female hormones change in magnitude and ratio during the day, the month, age, and during pregnancy.

You may wonder how we select YBM Foods.  As explained on YBM Diet, the diet uses a careful selection of foods in: Raw Foods, Low GI Foods, Nutrition Dense Foods, Alkaline Forming Foods, and Supplements.

Here we'd like to talk more about nutritional density.  If we can eat the densiest nutritional foods, we can eat less calories, achieving caloric restriction without mal nutrition, which is the only scientific known method of extending lifespan and extending young and productive lifespan.

In studying nutritional value of foods, we mainly look at:
1. Food vitamins and mineral quality.  However, since this is very dependent upon where's the food grown - soil, organic/inorganic, climate, air, etc., it is difficult to draw general conclusions.
