There seems to be lots of confusing information about eating nuts. Yes, indeed, nuts are high in fat and calories. But nuts are high in essential fatty acids, linoleic and linolenic acids, as well as monounsaturated fats, which is good for health. In addition, nuts and seeds contain plant sterols (phytosterols), which is also found in fruits and vegetables, and legumes. The plant sterols are beneficial because they interfere with the intestinal absorption of cholesterol, thereby lowering cholesterol levels, especially LDL. To learn more about nuts, read this article from Yale. In YBM Diet, we recommend taking nuts in moderation, i.e., 1/2 cup of nuts/day on a 2000 calorie diet.
