Many of us know that heart attack can come suddenly without warning.  Therefore a routine checkup is necessary to understand the risk.  However, there're not many tests that are credibly with high probability of accuracy.

One of the more definitive medical tests which identify risk of heart attack is the 64 Slice CT Angiogram (or MSCT). However, it's not only costly, but also exposes the body with meaningful amount of radiation.

A new FDA approved test called PLAC shows high promise.  The test, being a regular blood test,  is relatively risk free and low cost.

The PLAC Test is a blood test that measures the level of Lp-PLA2, an enzyme associated with the inflammation of your arteries. Increased levels of Lp-PLA2 increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

In most adults, cholesterol causes a fatty deposit called plaque to build up in the walls of the arteries. When these walls become inflamed, your body produces an enzyme called Lp-PLA2. If the amount of Lp-PLA2 is high, this may indicate that the plaque is more likely to rupture through the inside lining of your artery into your bloodstream, where it may cause a clot that could result in
heart attack or stroke.

So check with your doctor to make sure you add this in your annual physical.

The mainstream media and belief is that alternative medicine such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, most of them thousands of years old, are not based on sciences, rather they are based on trial and error without rigorous scientific experiments to verify the validity.

I submit here that time proven medicines are indeed sciences if they can survive for thousands of years.

In applied mathematics and statistics, as I studied in Harvard, there're two types of statistical averages, the ensemble average and the time average.  Both can be statistically significant.

Ensemble average is to observe an phenomena (e.g., an experiment) over many times (or objects) - the very base of scientific research.  For example, if you want to proven the effecacy of a drug, you design an experiment, and apply the drug to a number of rats or human (e.g., 300) for a few months, calculate the average results and draw conclusion.

On the other hand, time average is to apply this drug only on a single person at a time.  When this person is not availabe, apply to another (again only one person).  If you do this over many many years, you will get identical results as the ensemble average, if both experiments are designed correctly.

In mathematical terms, if a1, a2, ..., an are the measurements for the n rats or people during a fixed period, then the ensemble average EA = (a1 + a2 + ...+an)/n.  If b(t1), b(t2), b(t3), ..., b(tn) are the measurements oberserved sequentially during a long period time, t1<t2<t3<...<tn, then, time average TA = [b(t1)+b(t2)+...+b(tn)]/tn.  As n goes to infinity, EA = TA.

As man ages, one of the first sign is an increase of estrogen and an increase of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). This, even without reduced total testosterone level, will change the key ratio/balance of testosterone/estrogen. It's a known scientific fact that this is the start of andropause - a steady process of male hormone decline and out of balance, a major cause of aging. (Read more YBM Hormone)   When this happens, instead of immediately jumping into bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, a herbal approach should be first tried. This includes reducing estrogen conversion, blocking estrogen receptors, reducing DHT conversion, and stimulating testosterone production.   An effective tool for reducing the estrogen effect is a high concentration extraction from cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts) of key ingradients, such as indole-3-carbinol (I3C), DIM (diindolymethane), ascorbigin, sulphoraphine, indoles, isothiocynates and glucosinolates. Animal studies have shown that the cruciferous vegetable extract modulates estrogen hormones by favorably changing the ratio of protective 2-hydroxyestrone versus the damaging 16-hydroxyestrone. Indole-3-carbinol also induces phase I and II detoxifying enzymes that can help neutralize estrogen metabolites and xenobiotic estrogen-like environmental chemicals. Human studies support the beneficial role of I3C in positively altering estrogen metabolism. Di-indoyl-methane (DIM), a phytonutrient found in cruciferous vegetables, has been shown in animal studies to help maintain normal levels of a potentially damaging estrogen called 4-hydroxyestrone.

Leading authorities are advocating red yeast rice as an effective way to lower cholesterol (e.g., this article on WebMD), despite the fact that the primary ingredient in these red yeast rice supplements, lovastatin, is also the active pharmaceutical ingredient in prescription drugs for high cholesterol such as Mevacor, Lipitor, Zocor, and Statins. In fact, lovastatin was originally derived from another type of red yeast called Monascus ruber (read this article). For these prescription drugs, there have been many known side effects such as liver damage during long term use. For extensive drug side effect, review this article. Therefore, 1. Don't take "expert" advice for granted. Make your own research because in the end, it's your body which takes these drug or natural supplements in, not the experts'. 2. "Natural" does not mean "food". 3. Always take the lifestyle change approach to fix your issues if you can. Go to drugs or potent natural supplements when you have to, knowing the side effects.

There have been confusing studies about cellphone use in relation to brain tumor. A new warning from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, is contrary to numerous studies that don't find a link between cancer and cell phone use, and a public lack of worry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As the cellphone signals getting stronger and stronger, from 2G to 2.5G, and to 3G, as well as the added signal of WiFi, Bluetooth, radio, etc., it's prudent for us to take the precaution - so that we won't regret too late in the future.
The best way is to put it away from the brain when we talk, by using an old fashioned WIRED earphone, rather than a bluetooth.

Antibiotics can harm tendons, FDA warns. Yes, I know what you are going to say, "I used it because I have to - kill the bacteria, not because I like the side effects."   Life is full of compromise, isn't it? On the other hand, what if we don't "have to"? In the 5000 year Chinese medicine, it was said that top medicine treats people when they are healthy, middle medicine heals people when they are about to get sick (or in sub-healthy condition), low medicine deals with people when they are sick.   For YBMers, when we are healthy, we practice YBM Life! -- the equivalent of the top doctors. When people are in sub-healthy condition, we balance and re-balancing our meridians based on traditional herbal formulas and chi-gong -- the equivalent of middle medicine. Using drugs is really the last resort.   For example, in a sub-healthy condition, we can easily re-balance our energy system through 8 treasure test and herbs so that we don"t get sick. Even when we know we have bacteria infection, the first defense is to use a herbal formula to strengthen our system to try to fight it off. Only when this fails, we use potent drugs.

This is one of  the most significant research about the effect of lifestyle on genes.  Although we have no double lifestyle will change gene behavior, we are still somewhat surprised about how huge and widespread a lifestyle change can influence gene expression.  So let's take control of our own destiny - lifestyle by practising YBM Life!, so that we can stay young and vibrant for a long long time!

Here's a quote from the article:

More than 500 genes changed the way they worked. Genes with beneficial effects, including some tumor-suppression genes, became more active. Genes with deleterious effects, including some cancer-promoting genes, were switched off.

"It is absolutely intriguing this lifestyle change can have as much effect as the most powerful drugs available to us now," Haqq said in a news conference. "We medical oncologists are always looking for drugs that can do this. It is delightful to find that diet and lifestyle can have profound effects and work as well as drug therapies with fewer side effects."

Everyday I've been introduced to, by friends, or media, or Ads, wonder diet, magic exercises, super supplements, advanced anti-aging protocols, promoted and invented by famous doctors and scientists.   Usually the first thing I do is to check to see if they themselves are indeed in great shape. For if they are not, how can they save other people? Indeed, for 9 out of 10 times, or even more frequently, I see the "experts" being over weight, having a unhealthy complexion and filled with degenerative diseases. Furthermore, we see some big names died at relatively younger or at most normal age.   Frequently, the "experts" tell a story about how they are genetically in such a bad healthy, and now how they have reversed the genetic codes and become relatively "average". It's a real convenient excuse indeed, since we know for a fact that genetic deficiencies only manifest themselves when "activated" by predominantly unhealthy lifestyles.   So don't blindly follow big names, fashionable trend, and the crowd. Put your own judgement in place, especially see if the big names walk the talk! In YBM, we walk our talk by practising YBM Life!, a tested true anti-aging program. You can indeed see the YBMers age at a half the rate of age peers!

Sometimes, I wish scientists would spend the scarce research dollars doing some real stuff. For example, this research showed taking painkillers can enhance muscle mass during weight training. So everyone should take painkiller during training? What about the side effects to liver and kidney? A common sense explanation of this may be that people would be less in pain and could do more exercise if they take painkillers, therefore increasing muscle mass more. But this is not to trade with all the side effect of the drug.

In YBM Exercise, the main purpose of exercises is not for burnng calories. It is for flexibility, heart and lung functions, and for resistance training. Instead, if you want to lose weight, use YBM Diet and YBM Caloric Restriction protocols.

However, most of the fashionable exercise and diet plans promote the idea of exercises for burning calories. But there're several pitfalls of this idea:
1. It promotes "eating more" and "burning more" which accelerates aging (metabolim).
2. It is not efficient, i.e., difficult to burn as much calories as you eat in modern lifestyle.

Here's some fact to burn 100 calories, you need,
Bicycle riding - 10 minutes
Walking15 to 20 minutes
Dancing - 20 minutes
Tennis - 20 minutes
Yoga - 20 minutes
Playing Frisbee with your kids - 20-30 minutes
Swimming - 15 minutes
Volleyball - 30 minutes
Skateboarding - 20 minutes
Kayaking - 20 minutes
Horseback riding - 20 to 30 minutes
Golfing - 20 to 30 minutes

Here's some fact about eating calories:
A chocolate bar: 200-250 calories
A big mac: 576 calories
Daily calories: you may take in approximately 2500 calories/day. After about 3/4 consumed as basal metabolism (just for you to live), you are still left with 600-700 calories to burn without gaining weight.

When I read news such as "Study: Shorter Men More Likely to Be Jealous", and "Being underweight may raise diabetes risk", I cannot help thinking that these researchers seem to have no topics that could meaningfully contribute to the world. Instead they dream up with topics, spend the money, and use wrong statistical methods. It's like the blind men touching elephants, some say, it's like a large cylinder (for the leg), others say it's like a huge fan (for the ear).... In sciences, very often, conclusions are drawn without understanding the circumstances.

My door bell rang. I answered my door. It was a guy trying sell magazines to us. He is in his early 20's. "Is your parents home," asked he. "What?" I was a little stunned, not knowing what to say. "Is your parents home?" repeated that guy again. I did not say a thing. "Ok, I'll be back later," waved he at me, and left.

We cannot control the years going by. We still have to celebrate birthday one by one, regardless we want to add ages. But we are able to control, to a very large extent, how fast we age! On several occasions, people ask which college I am going, even though I know I've been out of college for decades! I feel I can continue to live young!

I own my thanks to YBM Life!

I keep hearing people say that they don't want to live long. They just want to be healthy. These people don't know that almost all degenerative diseases are associated with aging, biological or chronical. They don't know that longevity usually means not only longer life, but also longer healthy productive life. So longevity and live young and productive are consisitent goals.

Worm study show that the two genes which control dauer stage (a kind of hibernation state when there is a lack of food, or over population and the worm enters a state that he the metabolic rate is almost zero). When slightly alter these genes to make it “weak mutation”, the worm can double life span, and still live actively and reproduce. It also doubles its youthful lifespan. It is believed that in human, the two similar hormones that control age clock is IGF-a and insulin.

Both IGF-1 and insulin bind on the same type of receptor. The higher the resting insulin, the more signal to aging clock. Therefore, everyone should monitor the trend of this ratio over time in their annual physicals. If the ratio changes, measures should be taken to bring it back to balance as soon as possible.
