Being obese can take years off your life and in some cases may be as dangerous as smoking, a new study says.
Some video games might deserve more credit than they get, and could be a good teaching tool.
So say researchers including Constance Steinkuehler, PhD, assistant professor in the educational communication and technology program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Scientists in Hong Kong and Australia will soon test an experimental treatment for nose and throat cancer -- which "trains" the patient's own white blood cells to fight the disease.
The trial will begin over the next three months and blood samples will be collected from 30 nasopharyngeal (nose) cancer patients in Hong Kong, said lead researcher Daniel Chua, associate professor of clinical oncology at the University of Hong Kong.
These will be flown to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, where scientists will isolate and "train" a certain class of white blood cells, or T-cells, to fight the disease.
Whether or not acupuncture works has been long-debated; however, the National Institutes of Health Consensus Statement on Acupuncture reveals promising study results, showing the efficacy of acupuncture in postoperative and chemotherapy nausea and vomiting, and postoperative dental pain. The Statement also suggests other situations — such as addiction, stroke rehabilitation, headache, fibromyalgia, and asthma — in which acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment, an acceptable alternative, or be included in a comprehensive management program.
Headache-specialty medical management alone was not associated with improved clinical outcomes among our study population," the authors write. "Supplementing medical management with acupuncture, however, resulted in improvements in health-related QoL and the perception by patients that they suffered less from headaches."
Not knowing is a big stressor. You feel like you don't have options, but you do; you just might not like what you think are your only options.
DALLAS - Adolescent boys are far more likely to suffer high blood pressure than girls in the same age group, setting the stage for other health problems such as hypertension as they get older, researchers reported on Monday.
“The reason remains a mystery but it could be hormonal. We think it may have something to do with the onset of puberty in boys,” said Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta, lead author of the study and a physician at McGill University Health Center in Montreal.
Men are usually more prone to hypertension — chronically elevated blood pressure that can lead to heart disease — than women.
The recent information on drug-coated stents and the recommended drug regimen of up to a year means more dialogue between patients and doctors, said Dr. Cindy Grines, chair of the advisory writing committee.
